The hike to Half Dome is one of the signature adventures in Yosemite National Park.
Key facts
- Distance: About 14–16 miles (22–26 km) round trip, depending on your starting point.
- Elevation gain: Roughly 4,800 feet (1,460 m).
- Time: Most hikers take 10–14 hours.
- Difficulty: Very strenuous.
- Best season: Typically late May through October, when the cables are installed.
The cables section
The final 400 feet (120 m) of ascent uses two steel cables mounted on the steep granite face. Hikers pull themselves up while standing on wooden boards spaced between the cables.
Permits
A permit is required to ascend the cables when they are installed. Most permits are distributed through a preseason lottery, with additional daily lottery opportunities available during the hiking season.
Is it dangerous?
The trail is generally safe for prepared hikers, but risks include:
- Falls on the cables, especially when wet.
- Lightning and thunderstorms in summer afternoons.
- Heat exhaustion and dehydration.
- Fatigue due to the long distance and elevation gain.
Many experienced hikers consider the cables mentally challenging even if they are physically fit.
Training recommendation
Before attempting Half Dome, it’s helpful to be comfortable with:
- Hiking 12–15 miles in a day.
- Climbing 3,000–5,000 feet of elevation gain.
- Navigating exposed terrain without a fear of heights.
