HOKA Bondi 9 — maximum comfort

The Bondi 9 is the more protective and plush option.

HOKA increased the stack height and upgraded the midsole to a supercritical EVA foam, giving the shoe a softer and more resilient ride. It also uses a broad platform and rearfoot-focused Active Foot Frame for additional stability.

Why choose Bondi 9?

  • Excellent shock absorption
  • Very comfortable for long easy runs
  • Great for runners who prioritize protection
  • Stable platform despite the high stack
  • Smooth MetaRocker helps transition through the stride
  • Durable Durabrasion rubber outsole
  • Excellent option for walking and standing as well as running

The downside is weight. At around 297 g, it’s considerably heavier than the Magnify NITRO 3.

PUMA Magnify NITRO 3 — lighter and more energetic

The Magnify NITRO 3 takes a slightly different approach.

PUMA uses NITROFOAM™, designed to provide cushioning while maintaining energy return. The shoe has a 40 mm heel / 30 mm forefoot stack, 10 mm drop and weighs just 260 g.

It also uses PUMAGRIP, which is one of PUMA’s stronger points when it comes to outsole traction.

Why choose Magnify NITRO 3?

  • 37 g lighter than Bondi 9
  • More energetic feeling
  • Excellent cushioning without feeling as bulky
  • Higher 10 mm drop
  • Good option for everyday mileage
  • NITROFOAM gives it a more responsive character
  • PUMAGRIP provides strong traction
  • Breathable engineered upper

PUMA specifically positions the Magnify NITRO 3 for runs where softness and support are important, including longer-distance running.

🏃 Which one is better for long-distance running?

Bondi 9: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Magnify NITRO 3: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½

For very easy long runs where comfort and impact protection are the priority, I’d take the Bondi 9.

But if you want something that feels lighter and more lively, the Magnify NITRO 3 is arguably the more interesting choice.

⚡ Which is faster?

Winner: PUMA Magnify NITRO 3

The 260 g weight and NITROFOAM make it easier to pick up the pace.

The Bondi 9 isn’t designed primarily as a speed shoe. Its strength is its high-cushion, smooth and protective ride.

Neither would be my first choice for intervals or racing, but the PUMA is clearly the better of these two for faster daily training.

Which is softer?

Winner: HOKA Bondi 9

The Bondi 9 has a much more pronounced max-cushion character.

It’s particularly attractive for runners who want to feel protected during high-mileage weeks or who simply prefer a very cushioned shoe.

Which should you buy?

Choose HOKA Bondi 9 if:

✔ Maximum cushioning is your priority
✔ You want a very protective long-run shoe
✔ You prefer a stable, plush ride
✔ You do lots of easy mileage
✔ Comfort matters more than weight

Choose PUMA Magnify NITRO 3 if:

✔ You want something lighter
✔ You like a more responsive ride
✔ You want one shoe for most training
✔ You prefer a 10 mm drop
✔ You want excellent traction from PUMAGRIP
